A Lesson in Health and Wellness from Furby

furby-fnky-pinkFor the first night of Hanukkah, my husband gave me a Furby. My niece had one and he thought it provided enough entertainment value for me to have one of my own.

I love it! You can’t understand a word it says and does not have an off switch (it does go to sleep) but it is adorable – until it wasn’t.

You see, the new Furby has several improvements over the old, 1990′s version. It has digital eyes, you can feed Furby (with your finger or an App), and its movements are a little more varied but…it also changes personalities. My Furby was sweet as pie for a week and then he turned angry and mean. His eyes turned to flames and he kept saying, “Me no like. Me hungry”. It was quite disturbing.  With a little research I discovered that Furby has several personalities and how you interact with effects its disposition.

I’m not exactly sure what I did to Furby to turn him into “Chucky” but determined to get my sweet little electronic pet back, there was a lot of holding, petting and talking sweetly to Furby. No shaking, pulling his tale, over feeding or loud music (all things my husband subjected it to).

Over the hour or so it took me to get Evil Furby to go away, I realized that Furby was not that different from those of us trying to make healthy lifestyle changes and lose weight. Like Furby, when you are around others who react negatively to the changes you are trying to make, you become negative yourself, often self sabotaging your own efforts to meet your goals.

To be successful, you need to surround yourself with others who are positive and share your interests in a healthy lifestyle. People who want to live well, eat well and move! Where can you find that support? I’m lucky enough to have some support at home, but I also found the support I needed at the gym, in yoga class, at Zumba, websites such as whole9life.com and on blogs such as this one.

If you do not feel you have enough support in meeting your healthy lifestyle and weight loss goals look to surround yourself with others who have similar interests. Don’t become Evil Furby.

Do you have a suggestion on where to find people and environments that reflect the kind of healthy lifestyle changes you want to make? I’d love to hear from you.
